It all began as a ripple. The slightest of vibrations, in the infinite darkness of the Stygian Depths. The death toll of an entire city, souls sent screaming into the void. Into the waiting chains of Azasalim, an Elder Lich from time immemorial. Such events are hardly commonplace, and the sudden outpouring of lost lives caught his....Curiosity. He begins to send forth his agents, to gather information on the world above. He rallies his legions of undead thralls, summons his cabals of necromancers and cultists.
At first, it will begin as mere lights in the darkness, shadows in the light. Graves robbed, people missing. Skies begin to darken, and a chill fills the air.
Ancient Legends will return, and people will die.
Do you dare to interfere with the affairs of an Elder Lich?
Will you risk diving into the Stygian Depths, in search of knowledge, power, or relics?
Or will you attempt to form a bond with an Ancient Spirit, who will allow you to borrow from their strength?
Will you fail, and become another of the Lich's slaves?

OOC
The Deadman's Dance is going to be a long storyline, with results largely dependent on player choice.
The primary antagonist is powerful enough that he is incapable of defeat at the outset, and it is up to the players to discover how to began whittling away at the Lich's power. If the players are successful enough, the Lich can be brought down to his knees and forced to negotiate. Or be slain, should the players choose it.
Loot: The chance for players to receive their own Ancient Spirit, who will allow them to borrow their strength and skills by being channeled by their bond-mate. It does not grant a player access to the spirit's full range of powers, but rather requires practice and patience to learn how to use them. In addition, there will be artifacts, spells, weapons, and assorted generic treasure. Something shiny for all participants.
Difficulty: VARIABLE. Most encounters at the outset will be 4/10, but will increase in difficulty as the strength of the enemy in question increases. That said, death is entirely possible. There will always be a weakness, but it won't necessarily be obvious.
Most of the early incidents will be small-scale, as previously mentioned. The rate at which their severity increases will be related entirely to player actions.
